Fishing Web Site Hooks Users with Postcard

Bodies of water aren't the only place you'll find fishing and boating enthusiasts, now that the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation (RBFF) has its own online community, Fishington, at www.takemefishing.org. When the site launched recently, the promoters used postcards to lure in potential users.

"Since the postcards were going to a special, influential group of beta testers for the site, we wanted the postcards to feel special and invitation-like, which is why high-quality letterpress was used," says Mike Caguin, executive creative director at Colle+McVoy, the Minneapolis-based agency that worked on the campaign. "The online community and Web site are also considered a new, special destination. Therefore, we designed the postcards to mimic classic tourism postcards that celebrate travel destinations."

The team at Colle+McVoy designed a fishing-village scene for the cards. The front copy reads, "Take me fishing. Fishington, the fishing and boating capital of the Internet," and the back invites recipients to check out the Web site. The cards were sent to key stakeholders of the RBFF, such as state Department of Natural Resources officials, boating manufacturers, fishing gear manufacturers, etc.

The mailing definitely caught the attention of the groups the RBFF were angling for. "The client response was overwhelmingly positive and supportive," Caguin says. "Visitors to the site are helping to populate content on the site, since it allows users to add anything boating and fishing related."

Boogie Fever Hits Nicaraguan Restaurant Chain

Who says a restaurant meal promotion has to fit in the container the meal comes in? Definitely not Tip Top, a Nicaraguan-based chain focused mostly on chicken offerings. Just in time for the start of the summer, the chain offered boogie boards as a purchase-with-purchase promotion, co-sponsored by Coca-Cola.

"Once per year, Tip Top launches a summer promotion using a self-liquidator giveaway," says Angel Morales, managing director for C3i, the kids' marketing agency behind the boogie boards. "This is typically an item that is destined to create traffic and generate sales of a specific combo meal."
In this case, when a customer bought a family-size combo that included 12 pieces of chicken, rolls, fries and a two-liter bottle of Coke, they could also get the board for less than $5 U.S. Tip Top promoted the offer on TV commercials, on their Web site and in restaurants.

Given the global economic squeeze, recouping the investment on the boogie boards was a bit of a concern, but it turned out to be a non-issue.

"They ran out of all the boogie boards," Morales says. "Customers were happy that Tip Top was able to offer such a large/useful item while keeping the combo-meal price down. All of this translates to adding high-perceived value to the brand and to the promotion."

Heineken is a Chip Off the Old Blok

For the soft imported beer market, the summer couldn't have come any quicker. After all, there's nothing like hot weather to make people crave an ice-cold beer. Whether it's a backyard barbecue or a block party, Heineken wants to be the beer that's in everyone's cooler. To help push this objective, the beer brand rolled out its "Blok Party" promotion (apparently since it's a Dutch brand it can take the liberty of dropping the "c").

The Blok Party, which runs from June thru August, allows consumers to win the ultimate party � a Labor Day party for their entire neighborhood. Participants can enter online at www.heineken.com or by sending a text message from their mobile device. Heineken will provide the entertainment, catering and fun.

Second place winners will receive entertainment systems, Heineken "Beertenders" and free music downloads. Consumers who visit their local retailers will have the chance to receive a branded Heineken wall-mounted bottle opener as part of a self-liquidating offer which invites them to "Join the Heineken Blok Party."

At grocery and convenience stores, Heineken will also dangle cross merchandising offers for party essentials, as well as unique party tips. "The Heineken Blok Party program is the perfect way to kick off a great season of at-home summer entertaining," says Breege Murphy, channel manager for Heineken USA, in a statement. "Blok party has all of the elements and more to elevate the moment for our consumers and help our trade partners increase their summer Heineken and Heineken Light sales."

Promotional Products Make La Cense

While the presidential election proved to be a boon for the Democratic Party, La Cense wanted to make sure Americans didn't forget about Independent parties. So the maker of high-quality, grass-fed beef put its candidate "Angus La Cense" up for president. The fact that he is a cartoon cow didn't matter. What did was raising awareness of the Web site www.grassfedparty.com.

La Cense beef can only be purchased online, so finding creative ways to promote the brand offline is essential. Anyone who joins the party, for example, gets the chance to win four pieces of high-quality beef plus a free T-shirt. The Web site, and party, is not only designed to promote the brand, but also to serve as a community for people who support sustainable agriculture.

The company regularly hosts product demonstrations and sampling promotions where shirts, bumper stickers, buttons and totebags are distributed. One such event was held at the Conde Nast Cafeteria where chef Peter Hoffman cooked up some tasty beef and encouraged employees to sign up to learn more about sustainable foods. It also didn't hurt that Conde Nast owns some of the world's premiere magazine titles.

"Bring a purely online brand, and one that sells grass-fed beef, which is a new category to the vast majority of consumers in America, we believe there is incredible value in product sampling promotion," says L. John Yarusi, principal/director of strategic branding at Olive, the agency behind the efforts. "Branded products like the La Cense T-shirts and totebags reinforced the DNA of the beef. They were useful in connecting the brand to the audience once the sampling event was over, and were perfect because they had lots of crossover appeal."

La Cense has also had a presence during New York's Fashion Week, at Good Magazine events and at the Democratic National Convention. It even staged a mock acceptance speech for Angus La Cense in front of the New York Public Library.
